We sat down with Sam Pulley, our first ever fully qualified barber to learn his trade at Q through our training provider and in-salon education. Sam joined the team after the final lockdown with a dream of a new career, that he had wanted to pursue for years, so let’s delve in and learn a bit more about him…

Why did you choose barbering as a career?
When I was younger and used to go to get my hair cut, that’s when I first got the idea to be a barber, I was fascinated by the techniques they used and could have quite happily sat there all day watching them work.
Where did you choose to do you training?
I chose Rewards Hair Academy in Brighton after coming into Q and hearing how they wanted to begin offering barbering apprenticeships & training. They recommended their training partner, Rewards, so I went all in and began my journey.
Why did you choose there over the college?
I chose Rewards over the college because it has everyone that shares the same passion for hair all in the same place, also it allowed me to become further educated in the industry. I know Q have worked with them for years, so I trusted I would be in the right place for me and my education.
Why Q?
Q focus so much more on education than anywhere else I have seen, even when you have your qualification. This helps me move with the constant changing of trends, but also in the future so that I can always expand my knowledge and up-skill.
What’s your favourite product?
MVRCK (Maverick by Paul Mitchell) grooming cream is my favourite product because no matter what style hair the guest has, it works on them, I just have to alter the amount of product I use, or when it’s applied in the styling process. My absolute go to for styling, shape & hold.
What’s you favourite cut and why?
I love a challenge, so a change in style is something I LOVE getting my teeth into. Making my guests happy, their new style, and making recommendations based on their current problems with their hair. But if I absolutely had to pick a favourite, I love a skin taper, ending with a foiler to give a clean, crisp style, there’s no wonder a Friday appointment with me is booked up in advance already!

What’s special at the Barbers at Q?
We open early, and close late, but I have flexibility in my working life, so my guests can always book in with me. We offer walk-in appointments, but I am also available to book online 24/7 so if you have a tight schedule, you can guarantee I will be available for your visit when you need it. It’s a traditional feel in the barbers, with a great vibe. We’re also licensed to sell alcohol, which is great to enjoy a cold Corona whilst having your hair cut.
How do you style your own hair?
I have my hair in a messy slick back style with volume added throughout. I literally couldn’t achieve this look, that lasts all day, without my MVRCK products. I was sceptical at first at the products are more expensive than what I am used to, but the product lasts so much longer, and my style sees out the day (and night!). So it’s completely changed my mind on my own hair routine.
How do you spend your weekend and where do you go?
I love getting out and experiencing new things. You’ll see me at all of the racing events at Goodwood, I’ve just started my annual golf membership and if I’m not doing these, a walk with the dog, ending at the pub for lunch to watch the football. (If the boss let’s me!)
What are guys asking for now?
Skin fades are so, so popular right now, that super clean cut look is what most men are looking for, but we are starting to see the trend changing into longer hair, but maintaining a clean look. I’m really excited to see what the next most asked for hair cut is, and seeing you in the chair.
